Applebee's Best Chicken, Explained: What Each Dish Is Actually Like and Which One to Order

Applebee's Best Chicken, Explained: What Each Dish Is Actually Like and Which One to Order
Short answer: Order the Fiesta Lime Chicken ($16.49, 1,190 calories, 61 grams of protein) if you want the signature chicken dish. Order the Honey Pepper Chicken Tenders ($15.49, 1,610 calories) if you want the most flavour from a breaded plate. Order the Grilled Chicken Breast ($15.49, 760 calories) if you want the lightest chicken plate. Order the Chicken Fajita Rollup ($13.99, 1,020 calories) if you want the cheapest chicken dish or something you can eat with your hands. Every price below is this guide's listed menu price — Applebee's is franchised, so your restaurant's price can differ, and independent trackers currently list both lower and higher local prices for the same dishes. Checked November 3, 2026.

Most people do not need a ranking. They need the right plate for their situation, so start here:

Your situationOrder thisWhy
You want the signature chicken dishFiesta Lime Chicken, $16.49The long-running favourite: lime-glazed grilled chicken, Mexi-ranch and melted cheese, with rice and pico de gallo.
You want the most flavour from breaded chickenHoney Pepper Chicken Tenders, $15.49Sweet and savoury honey cracked-pepper glaze on crispy tenders — but the heaviest plate here at 1,610 calories.
You want the lightest chicken plateGrilled Chicken Breast, $15.49Lean, simply seasoned grilled chicken at 760 calories with sides — the lightest plate in the category.
You want the cheapest chicken dishChicken Fajita Rollup, $13.99Chipotle-lime chicken, peppers, onions and cheese rolled in a warm tortilla — the lowest price on the chicken menu.
You want a classic, shareable plateChicken Tenders Platter, $14.99Crispy tenders with honey mustard, fries and coleslaw — plain, plentiful and easy to split.

Every Chicken Dish, With the Numbers That Actually Matter

The figures below are the listed figures from our chicken menu. Protein and sodium are quoted only where our nutrition chart publishes them for that exact dish; only the Fiesta Lime Chicken has an exact nutrition row there, so only its protein and sodium are quoted here. Read the honest note on figures below the ranking before comparing these calories with other sites — several trackers quote chicken-only figures that run lower than the with-sides figures used here.

DishPriceCaloriesWhat stands out
Fiesta Lime Chicken$16.491,190Signature dish; 61g protein; saltiest here at 3,630mg sodium
Honey Pepper Chicken Tenders$15.491,610Heaviest plate here; sweet-savoury glaze
Grilled Chicken Breast$15.49760Lightest plate here; lean and plain
Chicken Fajita Rollup$13.991,020Cheapest dish here; handheld wrap
Chicken Tenders Platter$14.991,450Classic tenders, fries and coleslaw; second-heaviest

Two things jump out. First, the whole category spans only $2.50 ($13.99 to $16.49), so price should not decide this order — flavour and appetite should. Second, the calorie spread is enormous: the Honey Pepper tenders at 1,610 calories are more than double the Grilled Chicken Breast at 760, even though both cost $15.49. The glaze and the breading, not the chicken, are doing that damage.

1. Fiesta Lime Chicken: The Signature, and the One to Order First

What you get: grilled chicken breast glazed with lime-cilantro sauce, topped with Mexi-ranch and melted Jack-cheddar cheese over tortilla strips, Spanish rice and pico de gallo, $16.49, at 1,190 calories with 61 grams of protein.

How it eats: this is the dish customers keep naming first. A customer ranking built from social-media praise puts Fiesta Lime Chicken among the dishes guests are most enthusiastic about, with one regular calling it simply the best, and a 2026 Food Republic tasting of eight Applebee's entrées ranked it in the middle of its list — not because the chicken disappointed, but because it is very heavy: juicy, tender grilled chicken smothered in sauce and a lot of melted cheese. The lime glaze and the fresh lime wedge cut through some of that richness, and the pico de gallo adds freshness, which is why the plate works despite its weight.

One honest counterpoint: at 3,630 milligrams of sodium, this is the saltiest chicken plate here by a wide margin, and it is listed as gluten-sensitive on location menus, not gluten-free — shared preparation areas apply, as our allergen guide explains. If you are watching sodium, the Grilled Chicken Breast below is the safer order.

Skip it if: you dislike melted cheese and creamy sauces, you want a light meal, or you want something you can eat with your hands.

2. Honey Pepper Chicken Tenders: The Flavour Pick, and the Heaviest Plate

What you get: crispy hand-breaded chicken tenders tossed in a sweet and savoury honey cracked-pepper glaze, $15.49, at 1,610 calories.

How it eats: the glaze is the whole point — honey sweetness first, cracked black pepper second, over properly crispy tenders. Fans of the dish love it so much that the same honey pepper tenders top the Four Cheese Mac & Cheese pasta, and customer coverage quotes regulars ordering the mac and cheese specifically with the honey chicken tenders, sometimes without the sauce on the tenders so the pepper can lead. As a standalone plate, though, it is the heaviest chicken dish on this page by 160 calories, and no protein figure is published for it in our nutrition chart, so none is quoted here.

Order it smarter: if the 1,610 calories worry you, the plain Chicken Tenders Platter below saves 160 calories for $0.50 less — or split the honey pepper tenders with a starter from our best appetizers guide and treat them as the shared centre of the table.

Skip it if: you dislike sweet glazes on savoury chicken, or you want a lighter plate — this is the wrong end of the menu for that.

3. Grilled Chicken Breast: The Lightest Plate, and the Plainest

What you get: a lean, seasoned grilled chicken breast served with two sides, $15.49, at 760 calories — the lightest plate in the chicken category.

How it eats: exactly like grilled chicken should: lean, simply seasoned, flame-grilled, with the sides doing the supporting work. Location menus describe it as juicy chicken breast seasoned and grilled, served with two sides, and list it as gluten-sensitive. It is the only chicken dish here that leaves room for a starter or a dessert without turning the meal into a 2,000-calorie evening.

Read the calorie conflict before you compare: independent trackers quote this dish anywhere from 190 to 550 calories, because they are quoting the chicken breast alone. Our 760-calorie figure is the with-sides plate figure from our menu data, so the two numbers are measuring different things — neither is wrong, but they are not comparable. If you order it with lighter sides, your plate will land closer to the trackers' figures; with fries, closer to ours.

Skip it if: you want the meal to entertain you — this is a good chicken breast, not an exciting one — or you want a sauced, cheesy or breaded plate, which are the two dishes above.

4. Chicken Fajita Rollup: The Cheapest Dish, and the Handheld One

What you get: chipotle-lime grilled chicken rolled in a warm flour tortilla with sautéed fajita peppers, onions, melted cheeses and Mexi-ranch, $13.99, at 1,020 calories.

How it eats: like a fajita you do not have to assemble: the chipotle-lime seasoning gives the chicken a gentle warmth, the peppers and onions add sweetness and bite, and the Mexi-ranch ties it together. At $13.99 it is the cheapest chicken dish here, $2.50 below the Fiesta Lime Chicken, and at 1,020 calories it sits in the middle of the category — filling without being the heaviest plate on the table.

Skip it if: you want a knife-and-fork plate, you dislike peppers or onions, or you want the most chicken for the money — the tenders platter below gives you more chicken per dollar, just without the wrap.

5. Chicken Tenders Platter: The Classic, and the Least Exciting

What you get: crispy breaded white-meat chicken tenders with honey mustard, classic fries and coleslaw, $14.99, at 1,450 calories.

How it eats: solid, familiar and plentiful. A Tasting Table ranking of Applebee's entrées put the chicken tenders platter last among the dishes it tried, while still calling the tenders solid — adequately salty breading, pleasing outer texture, juicy chicken inside, a step above most fast-food tenders, and a portion big enough to warrant a doggie bag. Its own writer championed the honey mustard sauce, and the platter also offers Buffalo, honey BBQ, ranch and sweet Asian chile sauces. That is a fair summary: this is not the dish that impresses anyone, but it is the dish nobody argues with.

Skip it if: you want something distinctive — every dish above it has a stronger identity — or you want a lighter plate, since this is the second-heaviest dish here.

An Honest Note on Figures

Applebee's does not publish one national price list — its restaurants are franchised, and location menus currently show Fiesta Lime Chicken from $12.99 to $17.99 and Grilled Chicken Breast from $10.99 to $16.19 depending on the restaurant. The prices in this guide are our listed menu prices, last verified November 2, 2026, and your restaurant's price can differ in either direction. Calories follow the same pattern: Fiesta Lime Chicken is quoted at 1,170 to 1,190 calories by nearly every tracker, which matches our 1,190, but the Grilled Chicken Breast splits between chicken-only figures (190 to 550) and with-sides figures (our 760). Where sources disagreed, this guide says so rather than picking the flattering number.

You May See Elsewhere: Chicken Dishes Not Ranked Here

Two chicken dishes you may expect on this page are deliberately left out. Bourbon Street Chicken & Shrimp is a skillet dish, not a chicken-category dish, and it is covered on our skillets menu — it is also the chicken dish our own menu page calls the best-liked on the whole menu, so do not read its absence here as a snub. And one independent tracker reports 2026 additions called Lemon Parmesan Chicken and a Hot Honey Glazed Chicken & Bacon Skillet; neither appears on our chicken category page, so no price or calorie figure is asserted for them here. If either lands on the chicken menu, this ranking will be updated.

Getting the Best Value on Chicken Night

Before paying full price for two chicken dishes, check the deal pages: chicken has appeared as a 2 for $25 entrée choice, and our upcharge guide and 2 for $25 guide explain which entrées carry an upcharge and how much it varies by restaurant. The cheapest route to chicken flavour is not always the cheapest dish: a Chicken Fajita Rollup at $13.99 beats a $15.49 tender plate on price, but a shared starter plus two entrées on the 2 for $25 deal beats either of them if two of you are ordering. For the full deal picture, see our specials and deals page. And if chicken is only part of the order, our best steaks guide covers the other half of the grill.

Methodology: How This Ranking Was Built

Prices and calories are taken from our own menu and nutrition data (prices last verified November 2, 2026), cross-checked November 3, 2026 against Applebee's location ordering menus, which confirm the Fiesta Lime Chicken and Grilled Chicken Breast descriptions, sides and gluten-sensitive listings, and against two independent trackers (applebeesmenuprices.com and applemenuhub.com) plus published tastings (Food Republic's 2026 eight-entrée tasting, Tasting Table's entrée ranking and EatThis's customer ranking). Taste judgements follow those published tastings and customer coverage, not our own kitchen: where they disagreed with each other, both views are reported. Dishes are ranked by overall recommendation — flavour, distinctiveness, value and how filling the plate is — not by price or calories alone, which is why the lightest dish sits third and the cheapest sits fourth.
